Hungry humans and sandwich

Hello, hungry humans and sandwich savants! This Sunday, November 19, 2023, from 10 AM to the time when the stars start twinkling, Oak Street in the charming Carrollton neighborhood is transforming into a po’ boy paradise. That’s right, the 15th Annual Oak Street Po’ Boy Festival is ready to roll, and I, Karen Brem, the marketing maestro of the New Orleans Guest House, am here to butter you up for a day of feasting and foot-tapping.

Presented by the seasoning sensation Tony Chachere’s, this festival is where the humble po’ boy is king, and you—yes, you!—are the royal taster. It’s a culinary coronation that benefits the noble cause of the Son of a Saint Organization, which supports young men in our community. How’s that for eating good and doing good?

Now, let’s talk logistics before your stomach starts singing louder than a jazz trumpet. Entry to this sandwich soiree is freer than a jazz solo, but you’ll need a wristband to partake in the po’ boy pageantry. Think of it as your all-access pass to Munchville.

With over 60 different varieties of po’ boys, you’ll be in a bit of a pickle—and I’m not just talking about the garnish. From crispy fried shrimp to tender roast beef, each sandwich is a masterpiece stacked between loaves of French bread so fresh, they must have been baked by angels. And for the vegans out there, fret not! There’s a garden of plant-based options that’ll turn you into a believer.

As if that wasn’t enough to get your taste buds two-stepping, there will be stages with live music that’ll have you dancing in the streets faster than you can say, “Pass the hot sauce!” Whether you’re a jazz enthusiast, a brass band buff, or a funk fanatic, there’s a beat for every eater.

Now, where to lay your po’ boy-filled belly after the day’s revelries? The New Orleans Guest House, located in the historic Treme neighborhood—where jazz was basically born—is your spot. We’ve got clean rooms, affordable prices, and a staff so welcoming, you’ll think you’ve been hugged by a giant po’ boy (now, there’s a thought!).

Imagine this: you, strutting down Oak Street, the hero of your own sandwich saga, conquering po’ boy after po’ boy. You’ll need a strategy—start with something light, like a shrimp remoulade, then move on to the heavier hitters, like a hot sausage po’ boy that packs a punch like a trumpet blast. Pace yourself; it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. A delicious, mayonnaise-slicked marathon.

Remember, folks, this isn’t just about eating; it’s about culture. It’s about community. It’s about taking that first bite of a po’ boy and realizing that you, too, are a part of this delicious tapestry called New Orleans.

So, come Sunday, don your stretchiest pants and your dancing shoes, and join us at the Oak Street Po’ Boy Festival. And when the day is done, and you can’t possibly eat another crumb, waddle on back to the New Orleans Guest House. We’ll be the cherry on top of your po’ boy party sundae.

See you there, po’ boy princes and princesses! Let’s eat, let’s dance, and let’s give a toast to the bread that brings us together. Cheers!
